Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland, which can cause urinary symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and urinary retention. During the TURP procedure, a surgeon inserts a cystoscope, a thin tube with a camera and a cutting tool, through the urethra and into the prostate gland. The surgeon then removes excess prostate tissue that is obstructing urine flow using a heated wire loop or laser. This tissue is then flushed out of the bladder. TURP is typically performed under general or spinal anesthesia and requires hospitalization for monitoring afterward. Recovery from TURP may involve a temporary urinary catheter to help drain urine and relieve swelling in the prostate. Most patients experience significant improvement in urinary symptoms following TURP.
